Our GarageSkins systems will add a weight of approximately 50 to 60 lbs. for a two-car system and 25 to 30 for a single door system. The majority of our customers have had no issues with this affecting their opening system. However, once you install our system should you notice any straining of your garage door opener or should it not open at all, please remove the lower section of your GarageSkins system and have a garage door professional come and assess your springs. It is highly unlikely that you will need to replace your garage door opener or your springs, however your springs may need to be adjusted. Do not try this on your own, only certified garage door professionals should work on these mechanisms. Garage Door Must Be Metal Or Have Metal Frame Inside

1. GarageSkins systems utilize Rare Earth Magnets to attach to customer's garage door.

2. Garage doors must be metal or have a metal frame on the inside of the garage door for magnetism.

3. If you are unsure if your garage door has the ability for a magnet to attach, test your garage door by placing a refrigerator magnet to see if there is a magnetic connection.


Garage Door Sections

Custom orders not available at this time. Website will be updated when custom GarageSkins systems are available.

1.) The sections on your garage door may vary in height, please check all sections. We can fabricate some combinations of size, but not all at this time. By submitting your measurements to us we will be able to let you know if your combination can be fabricated.

2.) The very top section of the garage door might have a portion that sits behind the frame of the garage door opening (when the garage door is closed). This will give the appearance that the top sections are not the same height as the other sections when it actually is. If more than 3 inches in behind the door framing, then your GarageSkins system would fall into the custom order category

Garage Door Cannot Have Significant Damage

Customer would need to have a garage door specialist repair their garage door before using GarageSkins.

1. The magnets of the GarageSkins system must attach to the flat surface of garage door.

2. If garage door has significant dents or bows in/out with 1 or more sections of the garage door, this will prevent the GarageSkins system from functioning appropriately and will not give the desired appearance.

3. Without a flat/flush surface the 6 magnets of a single GarageSkins system panel might not attach equally. The performance of GarageSkins system relies on all magnets of the panels being able to attach collectively.

3. Minor dents and dings would be all right.

Garage Door Cannot Have Outside Handles or Security Lock

Customer would need to remove all security locks, handles and decorative hardware off garage door to utilize GarageSkins

1. GarageSkins system must have a flat/flush surface and any handles or security locks will prevent the GarageSkins system from functioning correctly and will not give the desired appearance.

2. Customer would need to remove outside handles/security locks. This, however, could affect the functionality of their garage door. (Example: if customer can only secure their garage door with the security lock or can only open their door with an outside handle)

3. Accessories garage handles and décor for GarageSkins system are being developed. (GarageSkins system will have specifically placed magnets built into their panels where décor can attach). WEBSITE WILL BE UPDATED WHEN GARAGESKINS SYSTEM ACCESSORIES ARE AVAILABLE


Garage Door Cannot Have Windows With Molding

Customer would need to remove window molding to utilize GarageSkins. HOWEVER, this could cause a functionality issue with the customer's garage door windows. Customer's garage door windows might not be able to stay in place without the window molding.

1. GarageSkins system must have flat/flush surface so all rare earth magnets on the GarageSkins system panel can connect to customer's garage door.

2. Windows on the customer's garage door that have molding (holding the windows in place) will cause an issue were the GarageSkins system panel magnets will not attach flush.

3. GarageSkins system should function correctly if there is no molding, protrusions or the window on the customer’s garage recesses.

4. Currently GarageSkins system systems do not have window sections built in, however these are in development and will be brought to market after our initial launch. If you currently have windows, you can install our system directly over the top, however this will cover the windows and block light from coming into your garage.  For this to work your windows cannot have moldings on the outside that don’t allow the GarageSkins  system to lay flush on your upper panel.  Once available, our WindowSkins sections will have a removeable covering on the back of the window that, when removed, will allow light to come into the garage through your existing windows. HOW IT'S MADE

Real wood veneers make all the difference. You can touch our GarageSkins system overlays, run your hand over them, and you’d swear it was solid, dimensional wood. Why? Because it is real wood. Even though it is only a fraction of a millimeter thick, it still looks and feels like a solid piece of lumber.



We select our veneers from a variety of species. This allows us to mimic almost any wood species out there while keeping the structural integrity of the wood.

Neodymium magnets (also called “rare-earth”) provide an amazing amount of force holding your GarageSkins system overlays solidly onto your metal garage door. They are even strong enough to reach through aluminum cladding and attach to the steel stretchers underneath. The result? Easy installation and permanent, dynamic adhesion.

  • I’m concerned that since the panels aren’t permanently attached, they may be stolen?

    This is a concern if you live in an area that has a high theft rate.  While a thief would have to know that these were GarageSkins system panels and not an actual garage door (not many thieves out there stealing garage doors) they could theoretically take all 16 or 20 panels off your door and transport them away.  A small dab of pure silicone placed at each corner of each panel before installation would suffice to make it difficult to just pop off an individual panel.  However, be aware that should you need to replace a panel or remove it, there is a potential for damage to the GarageSkins system panel, which would void the warranty.   We have yet to have a report of one of our systems being stolen.

  • Why aren’t GarageSkins compatible with wooden garage doors?

    Most wooden garage doors are manufactured to that specific opening that they are intended for, and therefore aren’t a standard size. Our GarageSkins systems are not intended to be used with wooden garage doors.

  • I have a dent/ding in my metal garage door. Will the GarageSkins system repair this?

    Only in the case of the smallest dings in your garage door will the GarageSkins system actually work.  This system was designed to embellish a functional, multi-panel modern metal garage door, and our strong magnets will force the panels to mold to the shape of your garage door.  If there is no damage, the panels will lay flat, but if there is a significant ding/dent, the GarageSkins system will conform to that dent and will not mesh well with the other panels.  Best to have that individual panel replaced before adding the GarageSkins system.  Contact your local garage door provider for your best options.


  • Can I order a couple of replacement panels?

    It happens. Junior has the car in drive instead of reverse, and BAM, bumper meets garage door. While there is some flexibility in our panels, should they be damaged, we can replace them by section. Our modular system and standardized sizing mean we can manufacture a section that matches closely both pattern and color. Please email us at customer.service@garageskins.com to discuss replacement panels.

  • I have windows in my garage door. Can I install a GarageSkins system?

    We currently are developing “WindowSkins” which will add a window look to the upper panels. However, this option will not be available initially. Please see the “Design Your GarageSkins System” and if that option shows, it will be available to order along with additional information.

  • Is a GarageSkins system paintable?

     No, however products are being developed that will provide a paintable surface.  The original GarageSkins system was developed to simulate the look of a high-end solid wood carriage house styled door and all our R&D has been around providing a beautiful wood exterior.  We have been contacted many times by people looking for a product like ours that is also paintable, so those systems are in development.  Please sign up for our newsletter on the left to stay informed regarding our latest products available.   • My garage door has a security handle in the center of the door. Can I still install a GarageSkins system?

    Yes, but the outer portion of the security handle will have to be removed.  Typically, these are held on with a small set screw in the side that will release the handle.  If any portion of the mechanism underneath sticks out from the front of the metal garage door, it will also have to be removed.  There is no way to anticipate the location of your security handle, so there is no way for us to provide a through-hole during manufacturing.  Simply drilling a hole through your GarageSkins system will void the warranty an expose your GarageSkins system panel to the possibility of water damage.

  • My garage door opening is arched or has angles at the upper corners. Why can’t I install a GarageSkins system?

    Currently, our GarageSkins systems sit over your garage door, and with the sides being lower than the center, there is no room for the overlays if you have curved or beveled corners. We will have a solution for these openings soon, please stay tuned and make sure to sign up on our wait list to stay current on our products.

  • Are there any other colors available?

    We currently have 7 colors available, Bali Teak, Tennessee Walnut, American Chestnut, Brazilian Mahogany, Charcoal Black, Western Cedar and Barnwood Gray.  You can see these color options as well as the patterns available in the “Design your GarageSkins System” section.

  • Can I custom order a GarageSkins system?

    Our GarageSkins systems are designed to fit most garage doors installed in the past 30 years. While there are some garage doors that are of a different size or configuration, we are not yet large enough to be able to accept custom orders. We do plan to offer Custom orders in the future. With our 5 initial patterns fitting most doors, and more patterns in development, we feel that there is a design that should be pleasing to almost anyone looking to upgrade the appearance of their garage door. We currently offer systems for both 7’ and 8’ tall doors, with widths of 16’, 18’ and 20’ for 2-car garages, and 8’, 9’ and 10’ for single-car garages.

  • I live in “Tornado Alley.” Will the GarageSkins system be safe on my garage door?

    We have tested our GarageSkins panels on a steel door up to an 80-mph wind and the adhesion held fine. Please see our Warranty as Acts of God are unpredictable.  We recommend you do not open and close your garage door during these times of extremely high wind.

  • My garage door has a high sun exposure, will the panels get damaged?

    Will these panels fade over time?  Our GarageSkins panels are triple polymer sealed against weather intrusion.  Each coat also includes a UV-protectant that should keep your GarageSkins system looking new for years to come and our chemical stabilization process ensures that the UV degradation is limited.

  • What is the delivery time?

    The actual amount of time it will be before you receive your product will vary depending on how many orders are in front of you.  When

    you place your order, you will be required to submit both a photo and measurements to us at customerservice@garageskins.com. When we have received your order via our order site including your payment, pictures and measurements, we will review your order. You will then be notified via email confirming we have your order and if it is immediately approved or any questions or concerns we may have. Once your order is approved, it will be moved to the production list. We will keep you informed along the way so you know when to expect your amazing and beautiful GarageSkins. The demand for our GarageSkins systems has been overwhelming as there is no product like it anywhere on the market; while we are actively scaling up our production, we want to ensure quality first and therefore are taking the time necessary to produce a quality product. We manufacture each GarageSkins system based on batch orders, and with curing times involved for each adhesive and finishing step, it takes time to produce a quality system. We will do our best to give you an approximate shipping ETA when you place your order.

  • I’m not able to lift heavy objects. How heavy is each panel?

    Each individual panel only weighs 2 to 3 lbs and is easy to install and handle  However, we do not recommend installing your panels when the wind is gusting as due to the size of the panel it can catch the wind and become damaged.   You may need to use a step stool or ladder to reach your upper panels.

  • Are there any special tools needed to install a GarageSkins system?

    No, however, you will need a small step-stool and a wide-blade putty knife to assist in repositioning the panels during installation. 

  • My garage door opener is old. Will it handle the extra weight?

    We are unable to answer this question and HIGHLY recommend that you contact a local Garage Door company to come and check your springs and opener when installing your GarageSkins system.

  • Can my kids practice sports in the driveway near my GarageSkins system?

    GarageSkins systems are decorative and not designed to withstand jarring blows such as Lacrosse balls, baseballs, basketballs, tennis balls etc. While Basketballs can bounce against it and not necessarily damage your GarageSkins system, hard impact from any object can potentially damage it. Damage caused by this is not covered under the warranty.

  • Can I add decorative hardware?

    HARDWARE – DO NOT drill into your GarageSkins system or try to screw ANYTHING to them. This includes adding any hardware to your GarageSkins system. The hardware shown on the photos in our gallery is magnetically attached (not magnetic hardware). Every GarageSkins system has been embedded with magnets in the location where the decorative handles and hinges would go.  The hardware shown in the pictures is purchased from Amazon Here. We will be offering our own hardware soon. If you want to add hardware, you can purchase light weight metal hardware such as this hardware (link above) DO NOT screw it in, locate the embedded magnets by holding the hardware over the general location you feel it should be, you will feel the magnets grab it. If you are not sure where, look at the photos in our gallery.

  • Do You Offer Financing?

    Unfortunately, not at this time however, we have it in the works.

  • Can I get samples?

    We have sample kits available for purchase through our website store for $29.95. This beautiful kit comes with all seven of our colors along with a larger piece of the actual product. 

    Before we ship it, we ask that you submit your photos and measurements to us at customerservice@garageskins.com.


    We want to make sure that your garage door is compatible before sending the kit.  If for any reason your door is not compatible, we will refund you for the kit and it will not be shipped.


    We do have color chips we can send out to you at no charge (2 colors only – if you want more than this you will need to order the kit), simply request these chips via email to orderinfo@garageskins.com.
